Oscar x Farmerrain

A grounded Scout, always prepared

An outdoor enthusiast embracing life to the fullest

Oscar Höglund, 46, stands firmly with one foot in the familiar world of scouting and the other in the Swedish Home Guard. Having spent more than half his life in Sweden, Oscar was born and raised in neighboring Finland. But regardless of whether he has lived in Finland or Sweden, one thing has remained constant—his deep love and respect for nature.

When did you come to Sweden?

-I moved to Sweden in 1999 and ended up staying because I had a son with my then-partner. Now, I’ve lived in Sweden for more than half my life… It’s crazy how time flies!

Today, Oscar lives in a townhouse right next to a nature reserve, running trails, and the forest—exactly how he wants it. He shares his home with his wife and two daughters.

How he met his wife is a story worth telling.

-We were best friends while we were both in relationships with other people. When those relationships ended, everyone around us could see that there was something special between us—but we didn’t realize we would actually fall in love!

Today, his best friend is also his wife, someone he knows inside and out. Kristin, as she is called, is a PE teacher and shares his passion for nature and movement.

-There are no good excuses for not getting outside and staying active when you’re married to a PE teacher! Oscar laughs.

During the day, Oscar works as a customer manager at the IT company Mediaflow.

His job is a clear contrast to his free time, but for him, spending time outdoors is essential for recharging and being his best self at work.

-The perfect counterbalance to a stressful workday is stepping outside, leaving the phone behind, and experiencing something raw, real, and simply magical.

Oscar has always loved the outdoors and was a scout himself as a child. Now, both of his daughters are scouts—something that makes him incredibly happy.

-It all started when I accompanied my daughter on a camp trip, sleeping nearby in case she needed anything. After just one day, the leader mentioned they needed another scout leader… and just like that—I was in!

His eldest daughter, Sigrid, takes after her father. Even at five years old, she preferred to sleep outside, ideally under a simple tarp.

-She loves wildlife and wants to be as close to nature as possible. We’ve had deer sniffing around our tent and rabbits hopping under our hammock. It’s amazing.

But scouting isn’t just about learning survival skills—it’s so much more than that.

-Becoming a scout leader felt completely natural. Sharing my knowledge with kids, seeing their excitement, letting them take the lead and explore the world—it’s incredible. The forest can become anything, and I love being part of that adventure.

What has scouting taught you?

-Scouting has taught me that life requires a certain level of acceptance—you have to trust that things will work out and learn to be comfortable with discomfort. Sometimes, you just have to deal with a wet sleeping bag!

But Oscar’s love for the outdoors doesn’t stop with scouting.

He is also active in the Swedish Home Guard—a role he had considered for a long time. Two years ago, he finally joined, partly because of his background in Finland, where he completed military service at 19.

-It’s a way to combine my love for nature with an important mission. I take part in exercises eight days a year and can be called in for crisis situations, like firefighting or search-and-rescue operations.

Just last summer, parts of his company helped fight wildfires. He describes the Home Guard as a way to give back:

-It’s about serving a greater purpose, contributing to the country. Carrying your own gear and sleeping in a one-man tent isn’t exactly comfortable—but it’s incredibly rewarding.

Whether it’s through scouting, the Home Guard, or family life, Oscar’s everyday life is deeply connected to the simplicity and power of nature.

- There’s something about the forest that always makes me feel at home.

Outdoor activities demand high-quality clothing,

As a scout leader and Home Guard member, Oscar knows how important it is to have gear that performs—regardless of weather or activity.

-Clothing should be durable, functional, and comfortable. And looking good doesn’t hurt either! For me, versatility is key—I do so many different things that my clothes need to work in the forest, during exercises, and in daily life. And of course, you still want to look presentable on a casual walk outside.

Oscar first discovered Farmerrain in 2014 when he bought his first piece of gear—a pair of Jolle bib rain pants.

-They are the best rain pants I’ve ever had! They’ve lasted through years of heavy use and all kinds of weather. Back then, I was sailing a lot, but they worked just as well in the wet forest.

A few years ago, he bought a new pair—but the old ones are still going strong.

-They’ve been amazing. Perfect for scouting and outdoor life, and I really appreciate Farmerrain’s focus on sustainability. That’s fantastic!

During a recent Home Guard exercise, he realized just how much he relies on his gear.

-It was so wet and cold, haha. I really missed my rain pants! But in the Home Guard, we have to wear our uniform.

So what makes Farmerrain’s clothing ideal for tough weather conditions?

-Whether it’s a walk, scouting, sailing, slush, or heavy rain—it doesn’t matter. The gear handles everything. The safety and durability are what I appreciate most. The right clothing and equipment make all the difference, especially in nature or during exercises. When you don’t have to worry about being cold or wet, you can focus on what truly matters.

Oscar is extremely happy with Farmerrain’s gear but has one request for the future:

-It would be great to see more insulated rainwear, so you wouldn’t have to wear an extra base layer underneath. That would make life even easier!

He also values supporting a company with a clear vision.

-Farmerrain isn’t just another company chasing profit. Their products are smart, well-designed, and worth every penny. It’s great to support a brand that truly cares about both its customers and the environment.

A fascinating and inspiring conversation—thank you, Oscar!
